'The most frightening philosopher of the age' Guardian 2001

We are delighted and honoured that the eminent philosopher Prof. Mary Midgley has accepted our invitation to be a patron of Joseph Cowen Lifelong Learning Centre and our Explore programme. In response to our letter, Prof. Midgley has replied as follows;

'Many thanks for your letter inviting me to become a patron of the Joseph Cowen Lifelong Learning Centre, and more particularly of its Explore Programme!

I have long known of these splendid institutions.  I have long felt cheered by their determined resistance to the feeble floppiness of our age, and inspired by the grandly positive statue of Joseph Cowen which stands near Newcastle Railway Station, calling us on.

What. after all, would be the use of education if it was not lifelong? What would be the point of all this talk about culture if nobody was actually cultivating it?
I shall be very happy to be one of your patrons, and to watch your future developments.'
